Making a difference

Fashion designers, many of Delhi’s businessmen, Mehrasons Jewellers Charitable Trust and the Australian High Commission joined hands to organize Spread A Smile, a charity fundraising event with a fashion show recently. It was held at the Henry Lawson Club at the Australian High Commission

Vikram Baidyanath and Anish Chanana were the host for the evening supporting their friend Sangita Mehra. Further supporting the cause were Gauri and Nanika, Pia Pauro and Malini Ramani.

“Spread A Smile” was launched by Sangita Mehra with an intention towards the overall improvement of one of the most vulnerable sections of our society; the destitute children that live on the streets and beg at traffic lights. Started in 2005 with ten children, Spread A Smile currently works with approximately 170 children that are between 4 to 17 years old.

Her Excellency, Ms. Harinder Sidhu, Australian High Commissioner designate to India said she ‘was privileged to be part of such a wonderful event, raising funds for the street children of Delhi so they could have an education.’ She praised the work of Sangita Mehra,  describing her as an ‘inspiring, connected and passionate woman, looking to change the lives of young people, particularly young women.’ She aslo thanked the Delhi community for coming out to support the cause.

The event was held at the Australian High Commission as a number of diplomats and families have been involved in supporting the school since 2015.

Seen at the event were Gunita Sodhi, Ammu Saidi, Ameeta Seth, Priyanka Sethi, Divya Gurwara, Anish Chanana, Divya Chanana, Ajay Mehra, Anita Bajaj, Piya Pauro, Malini Ramani, Gauri & Nainika, Amit Wadhera, Fatima Karan, Ambika Seth, Deepa Sama, Pushpanjali & Rohtash Chawla, Mini Shastri, Diwakar Shastri, Akhil Nath, Atul & Sonu Wasan, Ramneek Pantal, Tanisha Mohan, Sunaini Sarin, Isha Rajpal, Pallavi Singh Rathore, Neeva Jain, Nitya Bharany, Rohan Jetley, Anjali Chawla to name a few.

Spread A Smile will be establishing a vocational training and skill development center that will help in keeping the children off the streets permanently soon and help them get jobs too.. Those who are interested in supporting the cause can volunteer time to become a mentor, or by providing a job, or through sponsoring a training program or skill development program of some external agency and/or through any other method that is appropriate.
