10 Chairs -The Art Exhbition by Sonali Purewal and Pramiti Madhavji
10 Chairs or 10 Personalities? What are the thoughts that come to your head when someone says - chairs? A thing to sit on? Chair of power?
We will take you through a truly innovative meaning of ‘chair’. Founded and curated by Sonali Purewal and co-curated by Pramiti Madhavji, 10 Chairs is an innovative exhibition of different interpretations of the object ‘chair’. Nine pairs of artists have collaborated to bring to you this exhibition. The exhibition is raising funds for the 100 Good Karma Projects, a foundation working in the foothills of the Himalayas. Here are the chairs:
The chair by Puneet Kaushik and Ayush Kasliwal called ‘takeme’ is a political spoof, an art piece mocking the democracy. It has all functional pieces of a chair but with a twist. They aren’t working! The functionally pieces are disoriented just like democracy. The chair instantly draws you towards it.
A seat for the soul by Valay Gada and Mandeep Nagi reflects the struggle between the internal spiritual journey and the harsh reality of life. The chair has beautiful detailing and is a visual treat.
The Phantom of liberty by Anita Dube and Madhav Raman will remind you to the very first chair of your day. The WC! We are sure you have a grin on your face.
Shakuntala Kulkarni and Sanjay Puri’s La liberta was all about freedom and reels of life. There are nine planes to this chair symbolising reels of life. The design screams freedom just like its name.
Marcantonio and Scarlet Splendour’s Forest chair is so vibrant that it feels straight out of your favourite fairy land. This beautiful installation is functional and innovative.
Alex Davis and Bose Krishnamachari came up with ‘the 4th chair’. A beautiful concept of reading the chair and not sitting on it or touching it. The chair is made using the braille language.
Aren’t we all travellers in this world? Just mere visitor? Then why do we need furniture. Karl Antao and Gurjit Matharoo’s Me Raaj is based on this concept. This chair will definitely make you smile.
Martand Khosla and Gunjan Gupta’s Charity begins at home is an abstract representation of chairs and the world. 24 playful chair life objects. These installations are beautiful to look at!
The umbilical chair by GR Iranna and Klove is an art piece based on the relationships and interaction of social influences and humans. The detailing on this are so beautiful that you would continue to look at it for a while.
The exhibition is a visual treat for everyone and not just art lovers. There are installations, digital art and interactive art.
It is open for public viewing from 30th November to 2nd December at Gallery Espace.
